MEDIA RELEASE                                                                            for immediate release – May 27, 2019

Long-weekend Action! It’s motorcycle road racing time back at Barbagallo Raceway – this Sunday June 2.  The long anticipated return of the Championships since 2016.  This is the first of five rounds for 2019, with four rounds to be held on the revised circuit layout at Barbagallo Raceway, and the fourth round held on the brand new extended Collie Circuit in the south west.

Barbagallo’s new bike layout – the addition of a chicane just past the exit of Turn 1 has created a slightly different race experience with mostly positive feedback from competitors.  Though the new track surface is creating more of a difficulty for rider’s with increased tyre wear.

The Championship categories for 2019 will be Superbikes, Supersport, Sidecar and Production with Series for C grade Superbike, C grade Supersport, B grade Series and C grade Production. This Sunday’s racing will also cater for Clubman 1000 & 600 plus the recent introduction of the Golden Era bikes (Period P5/P6/P7 at Rd’s 1, 3 & 5).

Competitor numbers are on the increase with the premier class of Superbikes seeing the return of the top three 2018 State Superbike Championship holders -  Ben Stronach (VRT Yamaha R1), 2nd placed Cameron Stronach (Motorcycle Movers Ducati Paningale)  and 3rd placed Joel Beard (HAF Plastering ZX10R Kawasaki).  These three will be joined this year by Matt Price (Aqualyte Yamaha R1).  For the past 2 years Matt has been competing in the Italian National Championships held over 14 rounds each season on many varied race circuits throughout Italy.  Adam Senior (Senior Engineering Yamaha R1) is also back again and will be keen to secure a Championship win and potential title at the end of the season.

The 2018 Supersport Championship title holder Leigh Boujos will not only be looking to retain his title but will also be contesting the Superbike Championship on a new BMW1000.  The Cully’s Yamaha 2019 Supersport class is looking to produce some close racing this year with Leigh being joined by brother Tim who placed 2nd in the Championship last year, Tommy King who is keen to take his first ever Championship and will certainly be in the top runners as will young Callum O’Brien (Corse Motorcycles ZX6R 600) who is riding both State and National Championships again this year.  Callum this year joined the national BCperformance Kawasaki team aboard a 400 Kawasaki contesting 7 rounds of the Production Championship on the east coast along with the 5 rounds of the WA Supersport Championship.   Last weekend Callum raced at the new extended Collie Circuit setting the new lap record for modern bikes.  This Supersport field has quite a bit of depth this year with not only the above riders but also up and coming riders showing good pace - Bronson Pickett, Luke Carmona and Lachlan Hickey.

In the Production Class of 300 and 400cc bikes last year’s top two are back for another go - Bronson Pickett and Ian Fryer-Smith plus the lone female in the field – Brooke Carter will return to this class.

In the three wheeled action 9 sidecars will line up on the grid with last years Championship winners Graeme Evans and Jarrod Scott keen to defend their title against last year’s third placed rider Jero Joyce and passenger Corey Blackman.  Joyce is currently leading the Australian Sidecar Championships after a successful round at Morgan Park Qld recently.  Bunbury rider Dillan McDermott and passenger Paul Matthews will head to Barbagallo keen to run at the front after a successful weekend at Collie taking both race wins.

Support classes off Clubman 600 and 1000cc will also be run on the day along with the Golden Era Period 5,6 and pre-moderns – headed by Anthony McFadden  (GSXR750) and Adam Senior who will be stepping off his Superbike onto the older TZ750.

Qualifying will commence at 9.00am on the day with Racing from 11.00am.
